Stanley HOLDEN, son of Amos HOLDEN (c. 1863-1939) and Emma Susan BUXTON (c. 1865- ), was born circa 1898 in South Lopham, Norfolk. The details of Stanley’s military service have been taken from his discharge papers and accompanying documents. He enlisted on 30 May 1918 at Norwich, Private 59505, 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. He served on home soil from 30 May 1918 to September 1918, then went on to France, serving there until his wounding. On 26 October 1918, at Cambrai, Stanley received a shell wound to his right arm which was amputated the same day probably at the (Presbyterian U.S.A.) General Hospital. He was taken on 8 December 1918 to be treated at the No. 1 General Hospital at Etretet then the 4th Southern General Hospital in Devonport (13 December 1918 to 4 March 1919), then released to furlough. He attended the General Hospital Pavilion, Brighton (30 April 1919) and on 7 June 1919 was sent to the Queen Mary’s Convalescent Hospital where he was fitted with an artificial limb. Under Para 392 (XVI) K.R. he was deemed ‘non-effective’ and was discharged on 17 July 1919, to return to Lime Tree Farm, South Lopham. He died circa 1969. He is commorated in South Lopham- “IN GRATITUDE TO GOD / FOR THE LIFE OF / STANLEY HOLDEN / CALLED HOME 19TH JAN 1989 / AGED 90 YEARS / Absent from the abode / Present with the Lord / ALSO OF HIS WIFE EDITH MARY / 7TH FEB. 1909 - 7TH FEB.1993.”
